About Judge Lee

Judge Helen Shores Lee was born in Birmingham, Alabama to Arthur & Theodora Shores. She has been married to Robert M. Lee, Sr., for forty-seven years. Judge Lee and her husband have two sons, one daughter and four grandchildren. They are members of First Congregational Christian Church where she serves on the Board of Trustees.

Judge Lee was educated in the Birmingham Public School System. She attended Fisk University, Nashville, Tennessee where she received a B. A. degree in Psychology. She furthered her education by completing a Masters of Art degree in Clinical Psychology from Pepperdine University, Los Angeles, California.

Upon coming home to Birmingham, she was employed in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Alabama at Birmingham as an Instructor of Clinical Psychology, where she provided outpatient services for individuals and families.

After six years of employment with the Department of Psychiatry, she became Director of Clinical Outreach Services with the Jefferson County Department of Health-Western Mental Health Center.

Judge Lee decided to attend law school after fourteen years of working in the field of mental health. In 1987, she received her Doctor of Jurisprudence from Cumberland School of Law at Samford University. While a student at Cumberland, Judge Lee served as Chair of the Juvenile Justice Committee.

Judge Lee joined her father, Arthur D. Shores in his practice after law school. She practiced for sixteen years until becoming a Judge in January 2003.

Judge Lee served as a member of the Alabama State Ethics Commission and as its Chairman from 1999-2000.

She is a 2003 graduate of the National Judicial College at the University of Nevada. Judge Lee currently serves as a Trustee for Leadership Birmingham and on the Advisory Board of Cumberland Law School.

Her professional memberships include:

  • Alabama Bar Association
  • Birmingham Bar Association
  • Magic City Bar Association
  • Alabama Lawyers Association

When she is not on the bench, Judge Lee enjoys traveling and deep-sea fishing. She says “there is no greater way to relax than being out on the ocean catching red snapper and amberjack.”

When it comes to her personal philosophy, she has this to say:

As a child, I learned from my parents early the importance of giving back to the community. As an adult, I have found that giving of your time and service can be one of the most rewarding experiences in life. If I am to promote the welfare of my community and make my city a better place to live, then I must get involved and I must give of my time, my service and myself for the benefit of others. This is the model I follow in my professional career and personal life.
